She Chose to Become
She was born where dreams for girls
were whispered like sins,
where education was an alien word
and obedience was praised as virtue.
A brown girl taught early
that silence was safer than ambition.
But something in her refused to sleep.
She listened to that quiet rebellion inside
the voice that said this life is not all you are.
So she chose.
She pursued the degree she wanted,
not the one handed to her
like a cage disguised as care.
At twenty-two, she was married
not into love,
but into lessons no one prepares you for.
Walls disguised as family,
control masked as concern,
mind games played like tradition.
Yet even there, she did not disappear.
While they tried to shrink her,
she learned a skill no one around her
could even name.
She learned it in fragments of time,
in stolen hours,
in moments where giving up
would have been easier than believing.
But she built it.
Brick by brick.
Failure by failure.
She turned knowledge into power,
and power into independence.
Today, her name pays her bills.
Her courage feeds her future.
In 2025, she planted something of her own
a website, a vision, a declaration:
I exist on my own terms.
What looks small to the world
is a mountain climbed barefoot.
See through her eyes
and you will see endurance,
sleepless nights,
quiet tears,
and a determination that refused extinction.
She is not lucky.
She is not privileged.
She is forged.
A brown girl who chose rebellion over surrender,
intuition over fear,
and becoming over breaking.
And she is only just beginning.
